What category is Uber for credit card rewards?
· Category rules checked against issuer terms
Usually travel or transit. Uber rides are commonly reported to use the taxicab and limousine code, which most issuers put in their travel or transit category.
- Travel on Chase cards (taxis and limousines are included)
- Chase's rideshare or local transit categories, where a card has them
- Transit on Amex cards that reward it
- Dining
- The Amex Gold Card's bonus categories (rides earn the base rate)
How Uber is coded
Rideshare services are commonly reported to use the same code as taxis. Issuers then map that code to travel, transit or a dedicated rideshare category, depending on the card.
| MCC | Category | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| 4121 | Taxicabs and Limousines | Rides (commonly reported; Uber doesn't publish its code) |
| — | Uber One membership | Not published |
How card issuers treat it
- Chase. Travel includes "operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines," and Chase's Rideshare category includes "operators of taxi, limousine, and rideshare services."
- Chase. The Prime Visa pays 2% on "local transit and commuting (including rideshare)."
- American Express. Some Amex cards reward transit, which Amex describes as including taxis and rideshare. The Gold Card comes with monthly Uber Cash.
Good to know before you pay
- There's no current Uber co-brand credit card.
- Uber Cash is applied before your card, so the part covered by credits doesn't earn card rewards.
Getting the most from Uber purchases
- Set your travel or transit card as Uber's default payment, and your dining card for Uber Eats.
- Look at how a recent purchase posted on your statement or in your card app. That shows the category your issuer actually assigned.
