Why the same store can earn different rewards
2 min read
You've shopped at a store a dozen times and earned the bonus. Then one purchase earns the base rate. Usually nothing went wrong; the transaction just came through a different way.
Online versus in person
Large retailers sometimes run their online store through a separate merchant account from their physical locations, and the two can carry different categories. A chain that codes as a supermarket in person may code differently for online orders or deliveries.
Payment processors and marketplaces
Small businesses often accept cards through a third-party processor or marketplace. Depending on how the account is set up, the transaction may carry the processor's category or a generic one rather than one that reflects the actual business.
Store-within-a-store
A pharmacy inside a supermarket, a coffee bar inside a bookstore or a gas station at a warehouse club may each be billed under the host business's category, or under their own. It varies by location.
Franchises and individual locations
Franchised locations set up their own card processing, so two branches of the same chain can be classified differently.
What to do
- Check how a specific location or website was categorized on a past statement.
- If a purchase earned less than its category should have paid, contact your card issuer. Some will review it.
- When you're unsure, a flat-rate card is a safe fallback.
