Does DoorDash count as dining for credit card rewards?

· Category rules checked against issuer terms

Usually yes. DoorDash restaurant orders earn dining rewards on cards whose dining category includes delivery. The catch: some Chase cards put DoorDash in a separate food delivery category instead.

Commonly reported code Restaurant Commonly reported to post as a restaurant (5812 or 5814)
  • Dining on the Amex Gold Card (U.S. takeout and delivery)
  • Dining on Chase cards whose dining includes delivery
  • Dining on U.S. Bank Altitude Go (restaurant delivery)
  • Chase's "Select food delivery" category, where a card has it
  • Chase's "dining when purchased directly from a restaurant" category
  • Amex Gold dining for delivery outside the U.S.

How DoorDash is coded

DoorDash is a third-party delivery service, but its restaurant orders are widely reported to post as restaurant purchases. Issuers then decide whether delivery belongs in dining, and Chase sometimes carves it out.

How card issuers treat it

  • Chase. Some Chase cards have a "Select food delivery" category. Only DoorDash, Caviar, Uber Eats, Postmates, Grubhub, Seamless and Delivery.com qualify, via their own sites and apps. Chase's "dining when purchased directly from a restaurant" category excludes third-party delivery "even if they classify as a restaurant merchant."
  • Chase. DoorDash's own card, the DoorDash Rewards Mastercard, pays 4% on DoorDash and Caviar orders but excludes DashPass subscription fees from that rate.
  • American Express. The Gold Card earns its restaurant rate on "takeout and delivery in the U.S."
  • U.S. Bank. Altitude Go's dining category covers "dining, takeout and restaurant delivery."

Getting the most from DoorDash purchases

  • Check whether your card's dining category includes delivery, or whether delivery is its own category.
  • Several Chase cards include complimentary DashPass for a period. Check your card's current benefits.
  • Look at how a recent purchase posted on your statement or in your card app. That shows the category your issuer actually assigned.
