Does paying with your phone change your rewards?

2 min read

Short answer: paying with a mobile wallet earns the same rewards as the physical card, in almost every case.

Why it's the same

When you add a card to a phone or watch wallet, the wallet stores a stand-in number, called a token, that's linked to your real card. The purchase is still charged to your card, under the same merchant category, so it earns the same rate.

The exceptions

  • Mobile wallet bonuses. A few cards pay extra specifically for mobile wallet purchases. Check your card's terms.
  • Offers tied to how you pay. Occasional promotions apply only to tap-to-pay, online or in-app purchases.
  • The wrong card in front. The most common way mobile payments cost you rewards is simple: the wallet charges your default card, which may not be the best one for that purchase.

Security is a bonus

Because the merchant receives a token instead of your actual card number, mobile wallet payments add a layer of protection if a merchant's systems are ever breached.
